Nainital is Uttarakhand’s lake town – a 2,084 m bowl around Naini Lake, about 300 km from Delhi, where the whole holiday orbits one beautiful piece of water: boating, the lakeside Mall, the Snow View ropeway, and the wooded ridges of China Peak and Kilbury above. It is the state’s most complete family destination, and its most crowded one on summer weekends.

What to do
- Boat on Naini Lake – row yourself or take a shikara; the early morning water is the postcard.
- Naina Devi temple at the lake’s north end, and the Mall circling the water.
- Snow View – the ropeway from Mallital; on clear days the Nanda Devi wall fills the frame.
- Tiffin Top and China Peak – pony tracks and viewpoints above town; the peaks catch snow first.
- The lake district – Bhimtal, Naukuchiatal and Sattal are calmer, greener alternatives 20–30 minutes away (Nainital district guide).
How to reach
Kathgodam is the railhead (34 km) with overnight trains from Delhi; drive from Delhi in 7–8 hours, or fly to Pantnagar (~65 km). The final climb from the plains is steep and busy on weekends.
Best time and practicalities
March–June and October–February; town-level snow is occasional but China Peak and Kilbury whiten more often (snowfall calendar). Book summer weekends early; weekdays in September are the sweet spot. Timing detail: best time to visit Nainital.
