About Bageshwar
Bageshwar town sits at about 1,000 m at the confluence of the Saryu and Gomti rivers, built around the ancient Bagnath temple — one of Kumaon’s most important Shiva shrines. The district around it is trekking country: the Pindari, Kafni and Sunderdhunga glacier valleys all begin here, and the Katyuri capital of Baijnath lies 17 km away.
It is also the state’s quietest “temple district” — pilgrims come for Bagnath and Baijnath, trekkers pass through toward the glaciers, and the rest of the year belongs to river sound and orchards.
History & Origin
Bageshwar’s temple history reaches back over a millennium; the Katyuri dynasty’s capital at nearby Baijnath (9th-11th century) makes this district one of the oldest political centres in Uttarakhand. The Bagnath temple was expanded under the Chand kings, and the town grew as a pilgrimage and market centre on the Saryu.
The district was carved out of Almora in 1997. Its modern identity is inseparable from the glacier treks that start at its road-heads.
Culture & People
Kumaoni culture dominates: the Uttarayani fair at Bagnath in mid-January is one of Kumaon’s great winter gatherings, drawing traders, folk performers and pilgrims. Local crafts include woollen weaving and the copper work of the Baijnath belt.
Food is the Kumaon standard done well — bhatt ki churkani, gahat, madua rotis — with river fish appearing on some menus.
Climate & Best Time to Visit
The river valley is temperate: warm summers, a green monsoon, and cold but manageable winters. The high glacier valleys beyond are a short summer window only.
How to Reach & Connectivity
By rail: Kathgodam, ~180 km. By air: Pantnagar. By road: about 470 km from Delhi via Almora — 11-12 hours; Bageshwar is 35 km from Kausani.
