Kausani

Kausani is a viewpoint that happens to be a town – a 1,890 m ridge of tea gardens and pines facing a ~300-km panorama of Nanda Devi, Trishul and Panchachuli. Gandhi stayed here in 1929 at what is now the Anasakti Ashram, and the “Switzerland of India” tag has stuck ever since. There is almost nothing to “do” here, which is precisely the point.

Quick facts

Altitude ~1,890 m
From Delhi ~410 km (10–11 hrs)
Best months October–March (clearest), April–June
Ideal stay 2–3 days
Known for The Himalayan panorama, Anasakti Ashram, tea gardens

What to do

  • Sunrise from the ridge – the 300-km view is the entire attraction; pick a hotel facing it.
  • Anasakti Ashram – Gandhi’s 1929 stay, a small museum and a very quiet garden.
  • Tea garden walks – the Kausani estate slopes below town.
  • Baijnath temple (16 km) – the Katyuri-era Shiva complex, among the oldest standing temples in the state (Katyuri history).
  • Rudradhari Falls and caves – a short forest walk, 5 km out.

How to reach

Kathgodam railhead (~140 km) with overnight trains from Delhi; drive via Almora (3 hrs) or Bageshwar. Pantnagar is the nearest airport.

Best time and practicalities

October–March gives the clearest views – winter mornings are the sharpest. Avoid July–August: the panorama disappears into cloud (monsoon notes). Hotels are modest and inexpensive; this is a slow-travel stop, not a sightseeing base.
