July is the monsoon – and, for a specific kind of traveller, the best month in Uttarakhand. The hills turn rainforest-green, waterfalls run at full voice, the Valley of Flowers begins its famous bloom, crowds vanish and rates drop. The trade-off is real: landslides close hill roads every July, IMD orange and red alerts are routine, and rafting is shut. Plan July with buffer days and daylight-only driving, and it delivers what no other month can.
Weather in July
| Band | Daytime | Nights | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plains | 26-35°C | 22-26°C | Humid, frequent rain |
| Mid-hills (~2,000 m) | 18-26°C | 13-17°C | Mist, cloud forest mood |
| High Himalaya (2,800 m+) | 10-18°C | 4-8°C | Rain in the valley, sleet/snow dustings on top |
What is open and closed in July
- Valley of Flowers: open – bloom rises toward its mid-July peak (trek guide).
- Char Dham: open, but rain-disrupted legs are common – watch IMD orange/red alerts and build buffer days (yatra guide).
- Rafting: closed – operators suspend runs for the monsoon (season).
- Jim Corbett: Bijrani closed (from ~1 July), Dhikala closed (from ~mid-June); Jhirna and Dhela remain open (zones).
Best for
- The flower pilgrimage: Valley of Flowers – with two buffer days, minimum
- Waterfall season and green-valley photography
- Budget stays: rates hit the year’s low (cost guide)
Think twice if
- You drive hill roads at night or on a fixed schedule – read driving in the hills first.
- Your route crosses the Haridwar-Rishikesh corridor in the Kanwar window (see below).
Events and dates
The Kanwar Yatra (mid-July to mid-August; dates shift with the Shravan month) sends millions of kanwariyas through Haridwar and Rishikesh – expect diversions, closures and packed highways. Devotees may love it; drivers should reschedule.
