October is the clearest month of the Uttarakhand year. The post-monsoon air washes the haze away, the high snowfields look close enough to touch, the Valley of Flowers runs its final fortnights, every yatra temple is still open, rafting is in prime form, and Corbett’s Bijrani zone reopens mid-month. If you want one all-round answer to “when should I go”, it is October.

What is open and closed in October
- Valley of Flowers: open until 31 October – late-season bloom under the year’s clearest skies (trek guide).
- Char Dham: open all month – closing dates fall in early-to-mid November (2026 closings: 10-13 November).
- Rafting: prime season – post-monsoon water, clear days (season).
- Jim Corbett: Bijrani reopens ~mid-October; Dhikala follows ~mid-November; Jhirna/Dhela always open (zones).
Best for
- The best all-round trip: views, access and activity in one window
- Autumn treks: Kuari Pass, Har Ki Dun
- Panorama towns: Binsar, Mussoorie (pick weekdays over Dussehra)
Think twice if
- You travel on Dussehra or the Diwali run without bookings – festival weekends fill the classics (Diwali falls in early November in 2026).
- You expect snow – winter has not started; that is a December story.
Events and dates
Dussehra falls in October (date shifts yearly); Ramlila seasons run across the hill towns. The Valley of Flowers closes for the season on the 31st.
