About Nainital

Nainital sits in a bowl around Naini Lake, a 1.4 km stretch of green water that reflects the town’s colonial villas, temples and pine slopes. It is the most famous hill station in Kumaon and the region’s administrative and educational centre — a town of boarding schools, lakeside promenades and families on holiday for three generations.

The lake district around it — Bhimtal, Naukuchiatal, Sattal and the orchard ridge of Mukteshwar — offers quieter versions of the same landscape within an hour’s drive.

History & Origin

Nainital was “discovered” in 1839 by the sugar merchant P. Barron, who built the first European house on the ridge. The British made it the summer capital of the North-Western Provinces, and the town grew fast: churches, hotels, a jail, schools and the Raj Bhawan. The 1880 landslip — still remembered as a turning point — reshaped the town’s slopes and building codes.

After independence Nainital settled into its twin identities: the Kumaon administrative centre and the state’s most popular family hill destination. The Naina Devi temple and the lake remain its anchors.

Culture & People

Nainital’s culture is Kumaoni at its core — the Nanda Devi mela, the Aipan-painted thresholds, and the food of the Kumaon hills (bhatt, gahat, bal mithai). The British layer survives in the churches, the Mall’s architecture and the boarding-school tradition that still defines the town’s social calendar.

Boating is the town’s ritual: rowboats and shikaras at dawn, the lakeside walk at dusk, and the ropeway up to Snow View for the Himalayan panorama when the sky allows.

Climate & Best Time to Visit

Nainital enjoys a temperate hill climate: mild summers (15-27°C), a cool monsoon that wraps the lake in mist, and winters that hover near freezing with occasional snow. China Peak and the Kilbury ridge catch snow more often than the town itself.

Best Time to Visit: March to June & October to February. September offers the clearest lake-and-mountain views with the fewest crowds.

How to Reach & Connectivity

By rail: Kathgodam (KGM) is the railhead, 34 km below town, with overnight trains from Delhi. By air: Pantnagar Airport, ~65 km. By road: about 300 km from Delhi via Hapur and Moradabad — 7-8 hours with the climb.

The road up from the plains is steep and busy on weekends; arrive before dark.
