Uttarakhand’s money reality: cities work cashless, valleys run on cash. Plan for it and nothing goes wrong; ignore it and the last two days of your trip get awkward.
The reality check
- ATMs: plentiful in Dehradun, Haridwar, Rishikesh, Haldwani, Kathgodam; scarce in Binsar, Chopta, Munsiyari and Sankri-side villages.
- UPI: works in almost every town and most homestays — until the network drops.
- Network: Jio and Airtel cover the tourist corridors; BSNL reaches further in remote valleys. Download offline maps (maps prep).
- Entry tickets (parks, ropeways, temples) are often cash-first at smaller counters.
The rule
Carry ₹5,000–10,000 cash per person for any trip beyond the big four towns, keep ₹1,000 in small notes for tips and tea stops, and top up at the last big town before the hills (cost guide).
