Joshimath is the hinge of Garhwal – the ~1,875 m town where the roads to Badrinath, the Valley of Flowers and Auli all branch, and where Adi Shankaracharya established Jyotirmath, one of Hinduism’s four cardinal mathas, in the 8th century. Almost every Garhwal trip passes through it; few travellers give it the hour it deserves.

April–June and September–October. Note: Joshimath made national news in 2023 for land subsidence – construction zones and some buildings were restricted; follow current local advisories when choosing stays. It is a logistics town: sleep here, then move.
