Districts of Uttarakhand
Thirteen Districts, Two Worlds
Uttarakhand is thirteen districts stitched from two ancient kingdoms โ seven in Garhwal, six in Kumaon. Each has its own gateway town, its own shrines, and its own way of being Himalayan. Use this index to find every destination, trek and temple page by district.
Seven districts of the west
Dehradun is the gateway; the Char Dham road runs through Rudraprayag and Chamoli; Gangotri and the high treks belong to Uttarkashi.
Dehradun
Capital district: Doon valley, Mussoorie, Rishikesh, Chakrata. Gateway for all of Garhwal.
Haridwar
The Ganga’s exit from the hills: ghats, aarti, Kumbh heritage, Kanwar route.
Pauri Garhwal
Lansdowne’s cantonment pine, Khirsu’s orchards, Devprayag โ the Ganga’s first confluence.
Tehri
India’s tallest dam, the lake country, Dhanaulti and Kanatal’s ridge forests.
Uttarkashi
Gangotri, Gaumukh, Har Ki Dun, Dayara Bugyal โ the Bhagirathi’s homeland.
Rudraprayag
The Kedarnath corridor, Ukhimath’s winter seat, Chopta’s meadows.
Chamoli
Badrinath, Valley of Flowers, Auli, Joshimath โ the high-altitude heart.
Six districts of the east
Kathgodam is the rail gateway; the lake district anchors the middle; the frontier districts run to the Nepal and Tibet borders.
Nainital
The lake district: Nainital, Bhimtal, Mukteshwar, Jim Corbett’s Ramnagar gate.
Almora
Kumaon’s cultural capital: the old bazaar, Binsar, Kasar Devi, Katarmal, Jageshwar.
Bageshwar
Bagnath temple, the Katyuri Baijnath complex, Pindari and Kafni glacier trailheads.
Champawat
The Chand dynasty’s first capital, Purnagiri, Abbott Mount’s colonial cottages.
Pithoragarh
Munsiyari’s Panchachuli wall, the Johar valley, the Adi Kailash circuit.
Udham Singh Nagar
The Terai granary: Nanakmatta, Kashipur’s heritage, Pantnagar, the plains gateway.
Which gateway for which district?
Dehradun serves Garhwal; Kathgodam serves Kumaon; Ramnagar serves Corbett. The full mapping lives in the reach guide.
Three ways planners use districts
- Route logic: a Kumaon loop threads Nainital โ Almora โ Bageshwar/Kausani; a Garhwal loop runs Dehradun โ Tehri/Pauri โ Rudraprayag โ Chamoli. Districts tell you which loop you’re on.
- Season logic: plains districts (Haridwar, Udham Singh Nagar) are winter-friendly; high districts (Uttarkashi, Chamoli, Pithoragarh) run on the late-April-to-October window. Compare in the season framework.
- Depth logic: each district page carries its own history, culture, climate and top-attraction set โ use it as the pre-trip briefing for that leg.
Population figures on district pages follow the 2011 Census; altitudes, areas and distances are approximate.
