September is the balance month – and for many travellers the best month in Uttarakhand. The monsoon tapers, the skies progressively clear, the hills are still rain-fed green, the Valley of Flowers is still blooming, rafting restarts late in the month – and prices stay at shoulder-season levels. If you want most of October’s clarity with fewer people and lower rates, September is it.
Weather in September
| Band | Daytime | Nights | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plains | 24-32°C | 19-23°C | Humidity breaking |
| Mid-hills (~2,000 m) | 17-24°C | 11-14°C | Clearing skies, lush slopes |
| High Himalaya (2,800 m+) | 8-16°C | 1-5°C | Post-monsoon clarity building |
What is open and closed in September
- Valley of Flowers: open – bloom fading but abundant, with improving views (trek guide).
- Char Dham: open – a relaxed, queue-light yatra month (guide).
- Rafting: resumes late September as the Ganga settles (season).
- Jim Corbett: Jhirna and Dhela open; Bijrani reopens ~mid-October; Dhikala ~mid-November (zones).
Best for
- First-timers who want green plus clarity at honest prices
- Panorama towns emerging from the mist: Kausani, Mukteshwar
- Post-monsoon treks: Kuari Pass and friends
Think twice if
- You need all Corbett zones – the full set is open only from mid-November.
- You travel in the first week – the monsoon’s tail can still disrupt high roads.
Events and dates
Navratri typically begins in late September (dates shift with the lunar calendar); hill temples see festive footfall through the following fortnight.
