First time in Uttarakhand? Here is the honest three-step answer. Most first-timers overcomplicate the choice and under-prepare the timing. Follow this sequence and your first trip will be the good one.
Step 1 — Pick ONE base type
- Classic hill station: Mussoorie (ridge, cafés, Landour) or Nainital (lake, boating, Mall).
- Rivers and yoga: Rishikesh + a Haridwar evening.
- Wildlife: Jim Corbett.
Do NOT mix high-altitude treks into a first trip — save Chopta, Auli and Munsiyari for visit two.
Step 2 — Time it to the season
October–March for clarity and comfort; March–June for the classic green hills (book early for May); avoid monsoon for a first visit. Snow at 2,000 m is a gamble — see the snowfall calendar.
Step 3 — Follow the safety numbers
- Arrive before dark; trains beat night self-drive.
- 3 days = one base; 5 days = two bases, maximum.
- Book May–June and holiday weeks early (family plan if travelling with kids).
