Almost every hill-trip disaster in Uttarakhand is a driving decision. The roads themselves are good; the discipline is what fails. These are the rules — all of them learned the hard way by somebody.
The seven rules
- Daylight only. Start early, arrive before dark. Night + hairpin + weather = the accident formula.
- Check the IMD forecast before departure — rain and snow warnings are trip-changers (Mausam app).
- Monsoon: add buffer days and never argue with a landslide — wait for clearance (monsoon notes).
- Winter: carry chains (or hire 4×4 for the last stretch) and know that black ice forms early morning and after sunset.
- Honk on blind curves — it is the local convention, and it works.
- Fuel up before the climb; pumps thin out past the towns.
- Respect closures: district advisories and police barriers exist because the road doesn’t.
Self-drive vs taxi vs train
Overnight train + local taxi is the safest default for first-timers; self-drive suits experienced hill drivers; taxis with local drivers remove the risk entirely. If the itinerary crosses high roads (Auli, Chopta, Munsiyari), a local driver is worth every rupee.
