Lansdowne is the quietest hill station within weekend range of Delhi – a 1,706 m cantonment of oaks and blue pines in Pauri Garhwal, about 250 km from the capital, home to the Garhwal Rifles and to empty roads that feel borrowed from another decade. No mall, no cable car, no traffic jam: just the war memorial, a small lake, viewpoints and forest.

What to do
- Garhwal Rifles Regimental Museum and war memorial – the cantonment’s story, told properly.
- Tip ‘n’ Top – the ridge viewpoint over the Shivaliks; sunset spot.
- Bhulla Tal – the small lake with boating, run by the army.
- St. John’s Church – the 1930s church in the deodars.
- Tarkeshwar Mahadev (38 km) – an ancient Shiva temple in thick forest, on the road toward Pauri.
How to reach
Kotdwara is the railhead (~40 km); drive from Delhi via Meerut–Bijnor in 6–7 hours, or via Pauri. The final climb is winding but quiet.
Best time and practicalities
March–June and September–November. Snow is rare at this altitude; winters are crisp and empty. Book the small hotels ahead for long weekends – inventory is thin. Pair with Kausani or Mukteshwar for a longer Kumaon loop (hill-stations guide).
