Do Dham Yatra

The Do Dham Yatra – Kedarnath and Badrinath – is the circuit for people with five days, aging knees, or both. It covers the two most-visited shrines in one compact loop from Haridwar, Rishikesh or Dehradun, and it has become the most practical way for working travellers and elders to complete the yatra without a 12-day holiday. Registration is still mandatory (guide).

Why Kedarnath-Badrinath is the default Do Dham

The pair combines the circuit’s two headline experiences – the Jyotirlinga trek and the motorable Vishnu shrine – and the road between them is the most travelled corridor in Garhwal. (A Yamunotri-Gangotri Do Dham exists for the river-shrines purist, but it is far less common.)

The classic 5-day road plan

Day Leg
Day 1 Haridwar/Rishikesh → Guptkashi (~190-220 km, overnight)
Day 2 Gaurikund; 16 km trek to Kedarnath; overnight at Kedarnath or return to Gaurikund
Day 3 Trek down; drive toward Joshimath (~7-8 hrs); overnight
Day 4 Badrinath darshan + Mana village; return toward Pipalkoti/Joshimath
Day 5 Drive back to Haridwar/Rishikesh (~290-300 km)

With the helicopter, the same pair compresses to a single long day or one overnight: fly Dehradun (Sahastradhara) → Sersi/Phata → Kedarnath, then onward to Badrinath – commercial same-day packages from Dehradun start around ’1 lakh per seat.

Best time and practicalities

Run it May-June or September-early October – the windows when both shrines are open and roads are reliable (May | September | season dates). Build one buffer day for weather; book Kedarnath-side stays early; elders should consider the helicopter for the Kedarnath leg specifically.
