Uttarakhand Statehood Movement

The Uttarakhand statehood movement turned fifty years of grievance into India’s 27th state. The hills inside Uttar Pradesh faced forest controls, extraction, migration and administrative distance; the Uttarakhand Kranti Dal (1979) gave the demand a political vehicle; Chipko had already given it a moral argument.

The climactic years

  • 1994: mass rallies in Delhi; and on the night of 1–2 October 1994, police fired on unarmed activists stopped at Rampur Tiraha (Muzaffarnagar) — at least six killed, women activists assaulted. The incident made statehood unstoppable; in June 2026, three policemen were finally sentenced, 32 years later.
  • 9 November 2000: Uttarakhand — initially named Uttaranchal — becomes India’s 27th state; Nityanand Swami is the first Chief Minister.
  • January 2007: the state reclaims its ancient name, Uttarakhand.

The state honours the movement every 9 November — and with Gairsain, the hill capital the movement demanded, now the summer capital since 2020.
